Unter den freien Künsten, welche der göttliche Wohltäter uns zu Dienst überlassen hat, ist keine, die im ganzen Altertum mehr wertgeschätzt und in Ehren gehalten wurde, als die Musik. Das sogar so sehr, dass nur die in ihr Erfahrenen für weise gehalten, die Unerfahrenen aber des Leben nicht teilhaftig gehalten wurden, weil ja die Musik nichts anderes sei als Verstand, Leben und Seele des Alls und das ganze Gefüge unserer Seele und des Leibes durch Vermittlung der Musik verbunden sei und mit den selben Maßen, mit denen ein harmonischer Rhythmus gesetzt sei, auch der ganze Zustand Leibes und der Seele zusammengesetzt zu sein scheine. So gefällt auch kleinen Kindern eine süße Melodie und wird durch Musik die ganze Welt und jedes Geschlecht beeinflusst. Wie wunderbar ihre Wirkungen auf Zustände des Körpers und Geistes sind, erhellt aus den Geschichten von Terpander und Arion, Methimeus, Lesbios und Iones, die schwersten Krankheiten durch Beistand des Gesanges entrissen wurden. Ismenias von Theben soll mehrere Boötier, die unter den Qualen des Ischias litten, durch musikalische Weisen aller Beschwerden enthoben haben. Pythagoras beruhigte trunkene junge Männer, deren rasende Dreistigkeit durch phrygische Weisen angestachelt war, als sie sich dem Hause einer gewissen Frau mit brennenden Fackeln nahen wollten, indem er den Sänger langsam und getragen singen ließ. Auch die Schüler des Pythagoras bedienten sich, um sich der Tagessorgen im Schlafe zu entledigen, bestimmter Lieder. Wie freilich beim Lindern und Beruhigen der Zustände des Geistes Gesang und Instrumentalmusik am meisten vermögen, so nimmt bei dieser (der Instrumentalmusik) mit Leichtigkeit die Laute den Rang des Fürsten ein. Unter diesem hohen Namen wurde sie in jedem Zeitalter immer von den Fürsten wertgeschätzt. So beschreibt Homer, der Fürst der Dichter, wie Achill, der Tapferste der Griechen, seinen Zorn, mit dem er zu Recht gegen Agamemnon entbrannt war und sich deswegen vom Heer der Griechen geschieden hatte, mit Lautenweisen gedämpft habe. So kommt es auch, dass zu unserer Zeit ausgezeichnete Musiker um die Wette gerade die erlesensten Melodien, die sie für die Laute gerichtet haben, Fürsten zueignen und weihen. Nach ihrem Beispiel biete und widme auch ich diese musikalischen Blüten des Gesanges, die ich von den blumenbestandensten und berühmtesten Weiden unseres Zeitalters gesammelt und dann in Lautentabulatur (um ein gewöhnliches Wort zu verwenden) gebracht und hergerichtet habe, Ihrer Herrschaft. Dies zu tun, haben mich hauptsächlich zwei Gründe getrieben: Erstens, dass Ihre erlauchteste Herrschaft vor einigen Jahren mir die Ehre erwiesen haben, dass Sie, um das Lautenspiel dazuzulernen, sich meiner Arbeit und Dienstes bedienen wollten; danach, dass die Zueignung Ihres erlauchtesten Namens einen gewissen Glanz verleihen und diesem Werk die Gunst der um die Musik Bemühten gewinnen möge. Bleibt noch, dass Ihre erlauchteste Herrschaft diese ersten Früchte meiner musikalischen Mühen, zugleich Zeugnis meines Diensteifers und meiner Hochachtung Ihnen gegenüber, wohlwollend entgegennehme und billig zu Rate ziehe und auch, wenn Sie nach lautem Waffenlärm und Getöse der Haufen, von dem Ihnen stets die Ohren klingen, die Bitterkeit des Krieges mit der Süße der Laute mäßigen und von diesen musikalischen Linderungsmitteln eine gewisse Erleichterung des Leibes und der Seele wünschen, sie auch bekommen. Among liberal arts that God has mercifully granted for human use none is of more value and was during the whole of antiquity held more precious than music. Thus far they went that only those experienced in music were held to be wise, but the unexperienced to not participate in life, because music would, of course, be nothing else than knowledge, life and spirit of the entire universe, and the whole structure of our soul and body would be set together by musical means and by the same measures as those by which harmonical rhythms are joined and by which the whole state of body and soul would seem to consist of. That is why a sweet melody would please even an infant and music has its impact on the whole world and either sex. How admirable, however, its effect on the state of bodies and souls is, becomes clear from the stories of Terpander and Arion, Methimeus, Lesbios and Iones who were saved from serious illness by the support of song. Ismenias of Theben is said to have liberated several Boetians, who suffered from sciatica, from all troubles by means of songs. Pythagoras calmed down drunken young men who were raving with impudency goaded by phrygian modes, when they started moving burning torches towards the house of a certain woman, by commanding the singer to sing slowly and with a low voice. Also, Pythagoras's students are said to have used certain songs in order to be resolved from daily sorrows while sleeping. As well as vocal song and musical instruments can be of great help in appeasing and soothing the state of soul, particularly the lute among them easily holds the place of the prince, and princes of any era appreciated it under this magnificent name. And so, the prince of poets, Homer, describes how Achilles, the boldest of the Greek, after having justly become furious against Agamemnon and having divorced from the army of the Greek, calmed down his anger with lute songs. That is why famous musicians of our age compete in ascribing and dedicating the most exquisite melodies, arranged for the lute, to the most noble men. Following their model, I offer and dedicate these musical flowers, the melodies that I collected from the most flowery of the most celebrated meadows of our age and brought them into tablature, to use an ordinary word, and arranged them, to your most illustrious lordship. Mainly two reasons have made me do so. The first is that some years ago your most illustrious lordship payed me honour in that you wanted to make use of my labour and service to additionally learn the art of playing the lute. The latter reason is that the inscription of your most illustrious name might win some splendour and grace for this work among the students of music. What is left is that your most illustrious lordship take a favourable view of these first fruits of my musical labours (and that you kindly consult it) and at the same time of my single testimony of my zeal and respect towards you. Once you, after the severe noise of war and the clashes of armies that constantly make your ears ring, curb the bitterness of war with the sweetness of the lute, you may also demand and receive some ease of the troubles of body and soul from these musical appeasements.
